Top 70 Canoe Routes in Ontario
An indispensable resource to exploring the best paddling excursions this province has to offer.
Updated and expanded, this new edition highlights even more of Kevin’s favorite canoe routes. Every route is complete with maps of the access points, portage lengths, important river features and campsites, which Kevin embellishes with historical notes, anecdotes, advice and his humor. The book also includes an extensive list of items to pack before you go.
The outings range from two-day paddles to week-long expeditions, and while some of the routes are well known to paddlers province-wide, such as the historical Oxtongue River, others are hidden secrets, like Kevin’s ambitious and magical route through Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.
Saugeen River
A 2-3 day excursion over 104 km route with 3 portages, Saugeen River offers some challenging Class I rapids, but everything can be safely run by novice paddlers.
Crab Lake
A novice route with one quick portage, this is a 2-day trip over 10 km that is perfect for anyone's first canoe trip.
Hogan Lake Loop
This route will take 5 days over 74 km with 20 portages. There are some longer portages where moderate tripping skills would be an asset to have for the journey.
Noganosh Lake
An unmaintained, obscure route with short portages, pristine campsites and unbelievable fishing. Moderate tripping experience is recommended.
Charleston Lake Provincial Park
With no portages and just 2 days in length, this is a novice trip where the main campground is a stone’s throw away in case of an emergency.
Chiniguchi/Donald Lake Loop
This 74 km journey with 7 portages will take roughly 4-5 days. Moderate tripping skills are recommended because this is an unmaintained route. According to Callan, this is a perfect route for family paddling trips.
